Alvin was born on December 15, 1947, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan; the fourth of five children of
Harry and Bertha Popowich. He was baptized at the Evangelical Lutheran Church and was
received into communicant membership at Peace Lutheran Church at Rothbury (Churchbridge
Parish). He was raised on the family farm Northeast of Churchbridge where he developed his
passion for farming.
On October 30, 1965, he married his sweetheart Janet Welke in Langenburg. Shortly thereafter
they bought a farm east of Churchbridge and at the same time he worked at the IMC mine in
Esterhazy.
In 1973 they moved to their current farm Northeast of Langenburg. Alvin loved farming and was
proud of the fact that he was able to plant and harvest over 60 crops in his lifetime. Along with
farming, Alvin joined the PCS (Rocanville) family and worked there from January 24, 1979, until
his retirement on September 27, 2012, as their Safety Training Supervisor. During their 58 years
of marriage, they raised three children, Shannon, Corey, and Tanis.
Grain farming was one of Alvin’s hobbies, but his true passion was raising cattle. This was evident
since he had names for most of them. Despite being busy, Alvin always found the time to enjoy
several other activities and interests. From hunting, fishing, and trapping to snowmobiling,
ATV’ing and boating, he did it all.
Alvin was predeceased by his parents Harry and Bertha, as well as his brothers Jim, Doug, and
Harvey. He is survived by his wife Janet, daughter, Shannon; son, Corey (Trina); daughter, Tanis
(Steve); and grandchildren, Alex, and Chloe. Alvin is also survived by his sister, Arlene and many
nieces and nephews.
Alvin was a man of integrity and respected by all who knew him. We are genuinely thankful to
everyone who took the time out of their days to spend time to talk and visit Alvin. We would
especially like to thank Pastor Mauricio for being available for the family, Braendle-Bruce for
their support and of course the staff of Home Care and the Centennial Special Care Home in
Langenburg for the care they provided Alvin during his time there. He will be loved and missed
by all.
