Arthur Schmidt Obituary

Arthur passed away peacefully on Aug. 31, 2024 at the Langenburg Centennial Special Care Home at the age of 91 years with his family by his side.

Arthur was born on July 31, 1933 in the family home, to Adam and Carolina (Kotzer) Schmidt, the youngest of 8 children.  Art grew up with 7 older sisters.

He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church.  He was a dedicated lifetime member of the congregation and served on the church board in various positions. His confirmation verse was Psalm 86 v. 11.  ‘Teach me your way O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.’

Art married the love of his life, Eunice Andres, in 1962. They were blessed with 3 sons. Art enjoyed spending time with his boys by helping in 4-H, horse shows, riding, hunting, fishing, or sleigh rides with his team.

During their nearly 41 years of marriage, Art & Eunice were a team. They raised their sons and worked hard on their farm. They enjoyed socializing with all the neighbours and enjoyed travelling to various destinations like Texas, Mexico, and even Germany.

Art was raised on the family farm which he eventually took over with Eunice. He worked long, hard hours every day on the farm, which he took great joy in as farming was his true passion.  He continued living there after the loss of Eunice in 2003 until he moved to town in 2020.

He had a love of horses and took special pride in his team of horses and his team of oxen. He entered in many parades and the yearly thresherman’s show in Yorkton where he won the bag-tying contest one year.

Art enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved telling stories from his childhood growing up with his 7 sisters and of his fun during his younger years. His family enjoyed his stories of him going to school and church with the horses and bringing the cows home on his way home from school for milking.  A favourite story that would having him chuckling, was how his dad would race the horses & bobsleigh on the way home from church, and the time the sleigh tipped spilling his mother and sisters into the snow!

Art is survived by his three sons, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren: Lynn (Sandra) and family Jeremy (Erin); Janessa (Layne) and family Elianna and Alexandra; Alyssa (Brendan), Lynelle (Logan); Trent (Barbie) and family Wyatt, Cassidy, and David; Jody (Deanna) and family Hudson (Brielle), and Ella (Zach); sisters-in law: Madge Frieze, Diane Andres, Jean Schuler, and Esther (George) Haas; as well numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Adam and Carolina, his wife Eunice, sisters and brothers-in-law: Nathalie (Eric) Kitz, Erna (Bill) Baumung, Wilma (George) Baumung, Eleanor (John) Hanchar, Clara (Harry) Weppler, Marcella (John) Adams, Rita (Alfred) Kitz, Alfred Frieze, Lloyd (Marlene) Andres, Frank Andres, and Carl Schuler.

The Care Home staff was very fond of Art and often commented on his mischievous smile and humor which was present even on his last day.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
