Brenda-Lee Carol Layh of Russell, Manitoba passed away on Monday, June 29, 2020 at the Russell District Health Centre at the age of 59 years.
Brenda-Lee was born on October 29, 1960 in The Pas, MB. She was one of six children born to Peter and Verna Walko. A few years later, the family moved to Russell, MB where she grew up.
On September 3, 1977 Brenda married Raymond Layh and they later had three children: Gretchen, Greg and Michelle. For many years, Brenda was a homemaker. We are grateful for the gift of having our mom at home with us, and dad worked hard to make that happen. Growing up, life was simple, but we were content. Mom was a great cook - she could whip up a meal out of whatever was on hand, and there was always plenty to share if someone should drop by unexpectedly. Mom always had a pot of coffee on, and family and friends came over to visit almost daily. Everyone was always welcome and greeted with a warm smile. Mom was a kind and non-judgemental person - leading by setting a good example and always offering unconditional love and support. She enjoyed her garden, fishing and camping and always made the most of what she had. Brenda and Raymond spent a lot of their free time snowmobiling in the winter and riding the trails on their side-by-side with groups of friends during the summer. They were always together and Brenda was Raymond’s side-kick on the farm, doing whatever was needed. They also visited Mexico twice and the Dominican Republic and have many pictures and memories from those trips.
Eventually, the family expanded as their children grew up and began families of their own. Gretchen married Alan Antoniw and they have 2 children - Jackson and Kaitlyn. Greg married Brittney Kozakowski and they also have 2 children - Talia and Chloe. Michelle married Paul Dzikowski and they have 3 children - Alexis, Arianna and Layla.
Family always remained mom’s #1 priority and she was so proud of each and every one of us. She taught her grandchildren to enjoy all of her favorite interests. We are grateful for all the fond memories we hold in our hearts.
In July of 2019, Brenda was diagnosed with Stage 4 Bone cancer. She spent the last year undergoing treatments to slow the progression, but the cancer was too advanced. We are amazed by her strength and courage. Mom put up a strong fight to be here with her family, seldom complaining though she was often in a lot of pain. As per her wishes, Brenda remained at home with the support of her husband and family for as long as possible.
