David Edward Elliott Barnes of Birtle Manitoba passed away peacefully in Russel Hospital on August 20, 2022 at 88 years of age.
David was preceded in death by his wife Adaline Barnes nee (MacKenzie) and his parents Jack and Helen Barnes, his brother Gerald Barnes, and sister Rilla Lougheed.
David leaves his two sisters Ruth Barteaux and Marylou Reid (Dave), as well as seven loving children; Tom Barnes (Maryanne), Kathy Baldwin (Neil), Pam Graham (Allan), Jack Barnes, Mary Barnes, Pat Barnes, and Tammy Barnes, 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren with one more on the way.
David was born to Jack and Helen Barnes as the youngest boy of five children on the family farm 4 miles south of Birtle. David followed in his parents’ footsteps and farmed land close to his birthplace for the entirety of his life, never venturing far from home.
In his younger years David loved being an active dad, working hard alongside Addie to raise their large family on the farm. David took incredible pride in farm life and everything this entailed, including caring for a variety of animals and maintaining a huge garden. During this time, he was an avid hunter and curler, and even took part in a local band, the Haymakers, that ended up cutting a record!
David was a devoted father with a large heart and even bigger sense of humor – he liked nothing better than a good joke or gag, and anyone who knows our family can agree that this trait was certainly passed on to his children and grandchildren. He was also a humble, hardworking, and honest man that taught his children the importance of standing up for what is right and always lending a hand if you can. David loved life and had an incredible work ethic – he would often start an early workday by stating loudly and clearly, "if you can hoot with the owls, you can soar with the eagles!"
A known storyteller, David could weave tales of comedy and colour that would leave people talking for years to come. He would happily bounce grandchildren on his knee and laugh heartily during gatherings, and after his health made attending functions difficult, he still loved to sit in a comfortable chair and be told anecdotes about the family escapades and celebrations.
David is deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. The Family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to everyone that offered support and kindness in David's final years.
Dad, though you are gone, we feel your presence in our lives every single day and we love you more than words can say.
