David Lane Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of David Robert Lane of Birtle, Manitoba, on January 16, 2026, at the age of 76. David was born on August 16, 1949, in Birtle, MB. He was a devoted husband to Gail (Irvine) and a loving father to Jackie, Pam, Kurt, and Julie.

David was the third eldest of six children born to Fred and Ethel Lane. He grew up on his parents’ dairy farm near Solsgirth, where his lifelong love of farming began. It was there he learned the values of hard work, dedication, and commitment to family and the land. Although he attended school in Solsgirth, David’s heart was always on the farm. His days were filled with milking cows, completing chores, and riding horses—experiences that shaped the man he would become.

In 1971, David purchased his own farm along the Birdtail Valley, where he established a mixed farming operation. During the early years, he also worked at the Rocanville Potash Mine. In 1973, David met the love of his life, Gail, and they were married on May 4, 1974. Together, they raised their family of four while building a life rooted in love and perseverance.

Over the years, the farming operation expanded, including a transition into the PMU industry for 19 years. David took great pride in his horses and shared a passion for showing them alongside his family. In later years, he worked closely with his son Kurt, shifting the farm’s focus to cattle and grain.

Farming was not just David’s livelihood—it was his calling. His love for the land and livestock never wavered, and he spent his days tending to the fields and cattle. His greatest joy came from time spent with family, creating lasting memories and strong bonds with those he loved most.

David cherished the quiet peace of his farm and enjoyed long drives checking cattle, pastures, and crops. He was a kind and gentle man, yet strong and resilient in all aspects of his life. While home always held his heart, he also treasured time spent at Rossman Lake and enjoyed several memorable vacations.

David was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Ethel Lane; his brother Jim Lane; his brother-in-law Howard Pedrick; his parents-in-law Roy and Mervena Irvine; and his sister-in-law Loretta Slymon.

David will be lovingly remembered by his wife Gail; his children Jackie Oertel (Deone), Pam Evans (Jamie), Kurt Lane (Kristin), and Julie Huberdeau (Yanick); and his eight grandchildren, Kayla and Cody Oertel, Ava and Ashton Evans, Natalie and Grayson Lane, and Rave and Hanes Huberdeau. He is also survived by his siblings Donna Pedrick, Laura Graham (Norman), Tammy Graham (Harold), and Tom Lane; his sisters-in-law Darlene R. Lane and Darlene F. Lane; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

May he rest in peace knowing that he was truly loved and will be forever cherished in the hearts of those he touched.
