Donna Margaret (Farquhar) Zimmerman was born in Birtle, Mb on June 7, 1955. Mom left us way too soon on April 1, 2025 at 69 years young. She passed away at the Russell Hospital with our eyes and hands embraced together. Cancer had taken a toll on her body twice in her life but her soft caring demeanour shone through so bright all the way through her battle. Chad and I are so grateful we were able to spend the last few precious months with her by her side.
The Russell Hospital was her second home. She was a registered nurse there for over 40 years, then the last year of her life, a patient there. The friendships and memories made at the hospital were very special to her. There are endless heartwarming stories about her being “The Best Nurse” and being so loving and thoughtful.
Mom was a true farm girl growing up on her family farm NE of Birtle, Mb. She would spend her time helping her brothers with the farm chores and galloping across the fields and valleys with her pinto mare Judy. After high school she went and took her nursing in Winnipeg at the Misericordia Hospital where she made two very close life-long friendships.
Mom was predeceased by her parents E. Margaret (Barrett), (Bill) William Farquhar and her younger sister Anna (Terry Howard). She is lovingly remembered by her 3 children Leigha (Mark Bauer), Devon and Chad, her precious grandchildren Kaleigh and Deklan, her brothers and sisters-in-law David (Fern), Bruce (Candace), Ronald (Val) and all her cousins, nieces, nephews and Aunties, Ruth, Beryl, Ethel, Doris and Millie.
Being a no fuss kinda gal, she had a heart of gold and enjoyed the smallest of things in life. Every morning there would be an apple core on her bedside stand. As every night she would eat a gala apple and read her book into the late night. Down in the gulley as she always said, she had a special pussy willow that would have the first blooms at the tail end of every winter, well before any others. We picked the first ones two days after she passed.
Grandma “Boo Boo” cherished every moment with her grandkids. She instilled her love of nature and animals in them with her hikes to the creek where she’d play and explore with them for hours. There were also endless horse rides around the yard with them too.
Mom enjoyed many trail rides with close friends, 10 years of dragon boat racing with the waves of hope, many vacations with friends and family, gardening, cross country skiing, crocheting, bonfires and picking saskatoons and raspberries. She was part of a ladies group in town that made such good memories with her too. Mom also served her community well, making sandwiches or pies for events, sitting on the Park and Pool board, and helping wherever needed.
Mom made sure we were at every practice, always had home cooked meals, and was our biggest fan. Don’t worry mom, I’ll put it in a smaller container.
She will be loved forever.
