Doris Onchulenko Obituary

Doris Onchulenko, of Russell, Manitoba passed away peacefully at Russell Personal Care Home on Thursday October 27, 2022 at the age of 93 years, with her daughter at her side.

Doris was born on the family farm, in Lennard, Manitoba to Charlie and Alexandra Ungarian, a family of 4 children. (Lena, John, James and Doris) and later 2 stepbrothers Wilfred and George.

Doris had to leave school early to help on the family farm, until at the young age of 17 she met and married the love of her life, Steve Onchulenko. They moved to the farm he had just purchased on his return from the War.

They lived on the farm until 1953 when they sold and moved to Inglis where they purchased a small dry goods store which they ran together. They lived in Inglis until 1961 when they made their final move to Russell.

Doris worked from home sewing for many years as she raised her three children. She was a fantastic seamstress and sewed many wedding and bridesmaid dresses and did alternations and day to day clothes. As her children grew up she worked part time at the Fashion Shop in Russell, a job she loved.

Doris was active; her daily 4 mile walking group, making quilts with friends curling, baking bread and cinnamon buns, and canning and freezing their large garden. One of her passions was looking after the grandsons Devon and Jeremy.

Retirement offered an opportunity to take up golf, and the Asessippi Dam was a favourite picnic spot for many years for mom and dad.   In addition, she spent many hours back at her sewing machine piecing together quilts which were later all hand quilted for her children and grandchildren, She also enjoyed   knitting mitts and sweaters for her grandchildren. Her grandchildren and    great- grandchildren always had a special place in her heart.

Doris was predeceased by her husband Steve, sister Lena (Senyk), brothers, John Ungarian and James Ungrin and step-brothers George Bodnariuk and Wilfred Bodnariuk.

She leaves to mourn her children Ken (Susan), Lynn (Allan), Wayne (Amanda), Grandchildren Devon, Jeremy (Teresa), Kael (Samantha), Tory (Erin), Kelsey (Alex), Samantha and Emma, Great-grandchildren Emily, Audrey (Jeremy & Teresa), Liam, Presley (Kael & Samantha)

She will be remembered well and missed by many.

May her light continue to shine and may we find comfort in the lessons she has shared.

She is now at peace.

"As I sail away

Don't weep for me;

Wish me a pleasant journey

And wave goodbye;

Loved ones are waiting

With outstretched arms

On the other side."
