Dorothea Louise Salmon was born May 30, 1922 to parents Frank and Alma (Wood) Salmon. She had two brothers, Harold and Lloyd, and two sisters, Pearl and Julia. She grew up on the family farm south of Birtle, enjoying childhood activities and helping on the farm.
When the Amy family moved to a nearby farm Dorothea hoped there would be a nice young man, and yes, there was Lawrence. Lawrence went to Vancouver to work in the shipyard in the fall of 1941. Dorothea followed a few months later and they were married February 26, 1942. They returned to Manitoba in the fall of 1943 and started farming. Son Lynn arrived December 31, 1943, daughter Althea June 27, 1946, and Rhonda April 19, 1948. Dorothea worked on the farm with her husband and son Lynn. Mom enjoyed family, friends, and community events and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
The family increased when Lynn married Marlene Shepherd, Althea married Barry Asselstine, and Rhonda married Glengarry Longmuir. Now Dorothea has 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 14 great great grandchildren, plus their spouses and partners.
Lawrence and Dorothea moved into the town of Beulah but still came to the farm to help. After Lawrence’s passing on April 30, 1999, Dorothea moved to Parkissimo Lodge, Miniota, in 2000 where she enjoyed activities. Dorothea moved to Morley House PCH in May of 2022 and passed away December 24, 2023.
She is survived by sister, Julia Pierce, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Morley House PCH for all their kindness and help during mom’s stay.
