Edward Leslie Major was born to Leslie and Elizabeth in Bigger, Saskatchewan on January 2nd, 1945. He was 78 years old. He passed away September 9th, 2023, at the Personal Care Home in Russell, Manitoba.
He grew up on a farm near Sprague, Manitoba. Living there with his mother, stepfather (Emanuel Nordstrom) and his siblings. In his younger years, he was known for his athleticism such as how fast he could skate, and his excellent skills in baseball. Both Ed and his brother John played for the Sprague team in their high school years.
We all have to grow up; and for Ed it was being enlisted to the Canadian Armed Forces on January 17th, 1962, at the age of 17. He was able to travel all over the world, doing tours in Germany, Australia, Israel, Egypt, Cyprus, and many other countries. In Cyprus, sector 3, he was part of the Canadian Forces charged with patrolling the Green Line after the NATO Mandate started in 1964. In 1975 he received the United Nations Medal, an award received for his participation in a UN activity. He attained the rank of Sergeant Major. He retired from the military after 13 years and returned to Canada with many memories that often haunted him. He made his home base in Alberta upon his return to Canada. He became a helicopter pilot and worked for various companies around Calgary. His work took him from doing bear slings. working with geodetic surveys, to mosquito spraying in Winnipeg. Manitoba. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating.
He returned to Manitoba having made his home in Brandon. Manitoba for 25 years. There he owned and operated his own Forklift repairs and sales business. Ed was capable of fixing anything. As Ed would often say "If it was man made, a man can fix it". Ed and Mary moved to Russell, Manitoba in 2015 to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren.
Ed leaves to mourn his wife Mary (Janzen), one daughter Melissa, husband Keith: Four grandchildren namely. Genesis, Adriel. Lailah, and Charlie. His siblings, Sister Shirley (Lyle), Braden, Marty (Loretta) and Robert; as well as nieces and nephews.
Edward was an extremely intelligent man and accomplished many things during his lifetime. He will be greatly missed leaving many memories to cherish.
