Fred passed away July 2, 2026 at Birtle’s Sunnyside Nursing Home. He was born in Birtle hospital Nov 2, 1956 to Ernie C. Walley and Maureen Newsham.
In his early years Fred spent many enjoyable hours playing in the hills and along the Birdtail like so many kids who grew up in Birtle. His regular companion was the family dog Star. Fred’s whereabouts was often determined when his dad whistled for the dog to come out of the bushes or bull rushes.
As a young adult Fred moved to Winnipeg where he attended Red River Community College. 1982 he received his certificate in refrigeration & air conditioning and in 1994 he received his certificate in electrical. Fred remained in Winnipeg about 25 years, returning to Birtle 2002 to live with his dad. Many hours were spent at the fishing hole, either Spear Lake or Lake of the Prairies.
Fred is survived by two sisters and their families who appreciate the help of community support workers and of the Birtle people who tried to help over the years. Fred’s battle with addictions and mental health issues were a challenge for Fred and his family. Many thanks to the staff of Sunnyside for their excellent care in Fred’s last 4 years. It was greatly appreciated.
Cremation and private burial at a later date.
