He attended Balfour Tech in Regina and trade school (Electrician) in Saskatoon. Jerry took his apprentice training (1953) for Globe Electric and also worked for other Electrical Contractors. Jerry married Vera Cairns in May 1953. Their first child Susan was born in 1957. Jerry moved to Langenburg to work for Berger Electric at the IMC Potash Mine. Vera and Susan moved to Langenburg in 1958 and in September Jeff was born. In 1960 they moved back to Regina and in February 1961, Nancy was born. The family moved to Wawota, Sask to start an Electrical business. The next year, Jerry moved back to Langenburg to work for IMC, with the family following again. They purchased a home with the original permit as 1905 (The Schnell House). In 1966 Jerry started his own business, Jerry's Electric Ltd. Geraldine was born in 1970.
Jerry was involved with Cubs, Minor Athletics, various church committees and Sunday School teacher. He also served on the School Board for many years. He coached baseball and also coached one of the first female hockey teams in Langenburg.
Jerry was an Elk for many years activities which included Santa Claus Day in Langenburg with the prestigious position of chauffeuring Santa to see the kids, care home and other residents. He is Past Exalted Ruler and Past District Deputy for the Elks.
Jerry thoroughly enjoyed family outings such as camping, fishing, canoeing. He loved to recruit a crew for berry and crocus picking. Curling was a winter activity Jerry took part in for many years which included bonspiels in Langenburg and many surrounding towns. His favorite place was in front of the firepit in the backyard.
Jerry slowly phased himself out of the electrical business after he reached retirement age but was always ready and willing to give some advice when needed.
After Vera’s passing in 2019, Jerry spent his last years living in the seniors’ units in Langenburg. He enjoyed his daily drives on his route around town, and would venture down the rink to watch during curling season. He was a faithful fan of the Blue Jays and Saskatchewan Roughriders, no matter what the scores were showing.
Jerry had a very full life until the spring of 2024, when health challenges became greater. He kept plugging along until it simply became too much for him. His last month was spent in health facilities, waiting to see what the next plan was going to be. Jerry was extremely thankful for the wonderful care from all of his providers, as is the family. Of course, he was telling his stories and jokes right to the end. He passed away peacefully on September 20, 2024, at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre.
