Geraldine Lorraine Kendel

    Geraldine Lorraine Kendel (Welke) was born on June 24, 1934, on the family farm, 9 miles SE of Langenburg, to William and Violet Welke (Miller). She was baptized on August 8, 1934, into Christ Lutheran Church in Langenburg by Rev. A.O. Borchardt.

When she was nine months old, she got sick and was taken to Winnipeg Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed with polio. She was a patient at the hospital for 9–10 months and had to stay by herself, as her parents needed to remain in Langenburg with the rest of the family. When she was finally well enough to come home, she was left with some difficulties on her left side, but that never slowed her down in life.

Mom completed all of her schooling at Union Hill School, and during those years she made many trips into Winnipeg and later Regina for medical appointments. In her later teens, she helped various families with their small children and enjoyed doing that. She loved all animals, especially horses, and became a very good rider.

On June 12, 1953, she married the love of her life, Norbert. They lived on Grandpa and Grandma Baumung’s farm for seven years. In 1961, they made a big move 1½ miles south to the family farm and resided there until 1985, when they purchased a home in Langenburg. Together they farmed and worked side by side in everything they did. They always took time to visit with their neighbours and friends, which often included a good game of cards and a few drinks. Mom and Dad did quite a bit of travelling and enjoyed it. Their highlight trip was to Germany in 1980 to visit some of Dad’s extended family.

Mom had a great love for the outdoors and spent many hours outside in her yard and large garden, which always produced gallons of peas and lots of other vegetables. She also loved to bake and made some of the best bread, buns, and doughnuts. She was also a wonderful Grandma and Great-Grandma who loved having the grandkids and great-grandkids stop in for visits.

After Dad passed away, she enjoyed a few years in their home in Langenburg until she decided to downsize to the housing units in town and eventually made her final move into the Centennial Care Home in Langenburg. Mom passed away peacefully on April, Easter Sunday, surrounded by her family.

We love you, Mom, and will miss you very much.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, Norbert (2004).
Mom is survived by her 3 children: Keith (Wendy) Kendel, Brenda Weiss, Donna (Rick) Antosh.
8 grandchildren: Melissa (Jamie) Ingialdson, Krist (Charlie) Kitz, Erin Kendel (friend Buck), Allison (Randal) Fatteicher, Travis (Meghan) Weiss, Michael (Crystelle) Antosh, Crystal Antosh (Omar), Nicole (Troy) Recknell.
14 great-grandchildren: Emery, Boston, Kate Ingialdson; Hudson, Finley, Spencer Kitz; Grayson, Jayce Fatteicher; Rowan, Liam, Lainey Weiss; Cohen, Sawyer Antosh; Parker Recknell.
