Hazel Jean Wood (Marsh) of Birtle, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at the Westman Nursing Home in Virden, Manitoba, at the age of 85.
Hazel was born on June 24, 1940, in Russell, Manitoba. She grew up in Spy Hill, Saskatchewan, and attended school in Bavelaw, Saskatchewan. Hazel was a hard worker who dedicated her life to caring for others. Her career began at the café in St. Lazare. She later worked as a custodian at the Birtle Elementary School before finding her long-term calling at the Birtle Health Centre. There, she touched many lives while working as a healthcare aide, dietary aide, and housekeeping aide.
On January 20, 1962, Hazel married the love of her life, Charles (Chuck) Wood. Together, they raised three children and built a beautiful life filled with outdoor adventures. Hazel loved curling, snowmobiling, and playing bingo during the Manitoba winters. In the summer, she spent countless weekends camping and fishing surrounded by her family and close friends.
Hazel was predeceased by her beloved husband, Chuck; her parents, Harry and Iva Marsh; her brother, Ken; and her sisters, Norma, Marlene, and Sharon.
She leaves behind a large, loving family who will miss her dearly. She is survived by her brother, Keith; her sisters, Judy and Karen; and her three children, Dale (Lisa), Darlene (Marty), and Bonnie (Ian). She was a proud grandmother to Scott, Michaela, Laurelle, Bobbie Jean, Brett, Travis, Katelyn, and Cody, and a cherished great-grandmother to Ty, Eva, Charlie, Frankie, Fawn, and Bennett.
A Celebration of Life for close family and friends will be held at a later date, with interment to follow in the Birtle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada.
To know Hazel was to love her, and she considered everyone she met a friend.
