She attended Thunder Creek school and did domestic work for neighbors. In Roblin she worked in homes and also at the Roblin District Hospital. In her younger years she enjoyed playing ball, gardening, baking, crocheting and going to the Endcliffe rink to watch curling or just throwing rocks for fun. She also enjoyed travelling, fishing and camping. She enjoyed Christmas concerts at the Thunder Creek school and later when her boys went to Brightside school. She attended Bethany church when it was in the Freefield area and Christmas children’s programs with the van or sleigh box driven by horses. It was a 12 to 14 mile drive.
Herta was baptized and confirmed at Freefield Bethany Church by Pastor Rasenquist.
In July 1954 she married Herbert Nernberg of Shevlin, Manitoba in the Bethany Lutheran Church in Inglis, Manitoba. They bought a farm 3 ½ miles west of Russell where, at the beginning, lived in a small shack that a bachelor once lived in. They farmed with a 1945 case tractor, and to begin with, worked the land with horse drawn implements rigged up for the tractor. They also raised cattle, pigs and chickens. Weekly grocery money was provided from milking cows and shipping cream in a cream can.
In 1996 they sold the farm and moved into a new house in Russell. After the passing of her husband Herbert in 2003, she moved to the Lions Manor. She enjoyed spending time with the neighbors as well as gardening and crocheting.
In 2021 she moved to the Russell Personal Care Home where she received excellent care. She got the privilege of living with one sister and two brothers and at the same time breaking the record of having 4 siblings together at the same time.
In the last few months, she was very tired and often was asking to be taken home. Well, she is home now with Jesus.
