John Eugene Raymond Lewis-Smith (Jack), (age 91) died December 19, 2025 at the Russell Health Centre. He was born in Winnipeg October 21,1934 to parents Al and Evelyn Lewis. His mother remarried Jack Smith and in honour of both fathers, Jack adopted his hyphenated surname. He grew up in the North End and went on to attend the School of Art at the University of Manitoba. He taught visual and graphic arts at his own school and also at Red River College.
Jack worked in Social Services in Winnipeg but ultimately spent the last 30 years of his life drawing and painting. He loved jazz, classical music, Opera, and spent many happy hours listening to his favourites including Leonard Cohen.
He married Roberta Hutchison in 1990 in Birtle, Manitoba and they eventually retired there in 2006. They developed a wonderful community of friends in the area, all of whom admired his dignified demeanour and dry sense of humour.
He was predeceased by his brothers Al, Frank (Margaret), Barry (Jean), Wayne (Hazel), Eddie (Diane), sister Gail (Reggie), brother Myron (Gail), sister Linda (Wayne), and brother Billie (Gloria).
He is survived by his wife Roberta, brothers Vaughn (Lucy) and Glenn (Jane), many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at a later date.
