Loverna Kentel Obituary

Funeral Service for the late Loverna Kentel will be held on Wednesday August 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.

Loverna Nathalie Dolores Kentel (nee Popp) was born to Joseph and Wilhelmina Popp on August 13, 1928, on the farm 1 mile east of the Landestreu church.  She was baptized on Sept 9, 1928, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith April 18,1943 at Landestreu.  Loverna was the eldest of 6 siblings.  She attended Zorn School, completing Grade 8, when the need to assist with the farm work took a priority over her education.  Her work on the farm encompassed many tasks including milking cows, pitching hay, feeding the chickens and pigs, gardening and caring for her younger siblings. On April 17, 1949, she married Frank Kentel, and they began their lives together on farmland they purchased, and built their first home, 3 miles south of where she was born.

Frank and Loverna were blessed with 3 children: Darcy, Jane and Elden. Over those years spent on the farm they made many happy memories socializing with friends and neighbors playing ball, many card games, and church picnics. They remained on the farm till 1975, at which time they built their home in Langenburg. Loverna then began her 9-year career as a Dietary aid at the Langenburg Union Hospital. She retired in 1985, shifting her focus to her yard and large garden and providing a gathering place in town for family, friends and her grandchildren, where they knew they were always welcome to visit and enjoy her company and her many delicious homemade baked treats, or a meal of perogies, sausage and cabbage rolls. Frank and Loverna’s life in town continued to be filled with social activities involving the church and family and friends who always knew they were welcome and would enjoy a good time.

In 2004, following 55 years of marriage, Loverna mourned the loss of her husband Frank whom she lovingly cared for in their last years together. Her life then moved in a new direction.  Loverna’s strong and independent spirit had her engaged in many social activities in the church and community, including the ladies aid, bible studies, Red Hat ladies, Bunco group and the New Horizon’s Seniors group where she was well known for her skill at “Sheep’s Head”.  Always a puzzle on the kitchen table, a craft or sewing project on the go, a cake in the oven, and a smile to greet you.

Loverna lived in her home until Sept 2022, at which time she moved into an assisted living facility in Yorkton, Sk. There she was appreciated and known for her bright smile and desire to take part in any entertainment or activities that she was able to participate in. The workers spun her around in her wheelchair on the dance floor, old time music being her favorite.

Her final month was spent in the Yorkton and District Nursing Home where she was well cared for till our Lord called her to heavenly home on July 22, 2025.

Loverna is predeceased by her parents; Joe and Minnie Pop;  parents-in-law, Andreas and Christina Kentel; her siblings, Vaughn Popp, Merceda Finlayson, and Eunice Baumung; her brothers in law, Jack Finlayson and Reinhold Baumung; brothers and sisters-in-law, Valentine and Elizabeth Kentel, Henry and Wilhelmina Kentel, Marry and Ted Wagner, Christian and Winnie Kentel, Lena and Eugene Wagner, Phillip and Natalia Kentel, Joseph and Winnie Kentel, Harold and Clara Kentel;  grandchildren Sarah and Ethan Kentel.

She is lovingly remembered by her children Darcy and Laurie Kentel, Jane and Ross Bowman, Elden and Cheryl Kentel; grandchildren Terri (Larry) Kentel-Weinheimer, Derek (Jacklyn) Kentel, Tyson (Emma Bernard) Kentel; Jackie (Peter) Bowman/Miles, Janelle (Jason) Seidler, Matthew (Lindsay) Bowman, Jenna (Nathan) Kentel; step grandchildren, McKenna, Anisten and Dawson Thom; great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Kolby Weinheimer, Brandtley and Declan Kentel, Londyn and Luna Kentel, Allister Miles, Sophie, Max and Stella Seidler, Jack and Luke Bowman; sisters Karen (Bob) Charette and Marilyn (Harry) Antony, sister in law, Ev Popp.  She is also lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews on both the Popp and Kentel side of the family whom she always loved to see.
