Maria Mildred Michalchuk, of Rossburn, MB passed away peacefully on October 17, 2023 at the Rossburn Personal Care Home at the age of 97.
Maria was born on June 2, 1926 to Basil and Domitzela Michalchuk on the family farm, 5 1/2 miles north of Angusville, MB. She attended Lima School and completed her Grade 12 education at Sacred Heart Institute in Yorkton, SK, graduating in 1944. During that summer she enrolled in a Department of Education course at United College (now the University of Winnipeg) to become a permit teacher. After one year of teaching at Birdtail School she enrolled at the Winnipeg Normal School and completed her teaching certification. Her teaching career spanned 43 years – first in one room schools in rural Manitoba, next as a teacher/principal at Wonowon Elementary School, Mile 101 Alaska Highway, BC and finally as a primary teacher with the Winnipeg School Division No. 1. She taught Grades 1 & 2 at Norquay School for 9 years and then Grade 1 at Fort Rouge School for 23 years. She retired in June of 1990. Maria was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Manitoba and Retired Women Teachers Association Chapter.
After retiring, she moved to the same farm section that her daughter and son-in-law Leslie and Dale Luhowy and family reside on. She loved spending time visiting and hosting family and friends, gardening, looking after her yard and caring for and spending time with her grandchildren. In February 2001, she moved into the Rossburn Lions Manor where she resided until August 2021. She then moved into the Rossburn Personal Care Home where she resided until the time of her passing.
She was predeceased by her parents Basil and Domitzela (Naherniak), her brothers Leon (Mary Lisowecki), Emil (Mildred Olynyk), Nestor, Morris (Pauline Kozak-Kowal), Julien (Mary Moshondz), Eugene, Horace (Mary Boryskavich), Marion (Stella Korniat), Bill, her sisters Eugenia, Olive (Roy Kohuch), Marie (Walter Pawluk), Theresa (Charlie Pawluk), and her life partner RCAF Flight Lieutenant Arthur Cecil Fanning. Maria is survived by her daughter Leslie Luhowy, son-in-law Dale Luhowy, grandchildren Sarah Luhowy (Kolton Wilks), Madisson Luhowy, and Drew Luhowy. Sisters-in-law Jean Michalchuk (Matiowsky), Wanda Michalchuk (Mushumanski) and numerous nieces and nephews.
