Mary Eleanor Fleury (Pelletier) was born to Louis Pelletier and Pauline Fleury on March 3, 1940. Mary had 11 siblings – Rose, Paul, Frank, Harvey, George, Beatrice, Alex, Janet, Henry, and Kenny. She is predeceased by her daughter Beverly, her parents, Louis and Pauline, siblings Rose, Paul, Alex, Frank, and Janet. She is also predeceased by husbands Roger Smith and Riel Fleury.
Mary is survived by her children Carl, Terry (Wanda), Kenny, Robert (Barb), Debbie, Sandra (Jeff), Brenda (Ernie). Her siblings Harvey (Verna), George (Elaine), Beatrice, Henry, and Kenny, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary loved spending time with her family and friends, especially at Ste. Madeleine, a special place for her. The yearly tradition of Metis Days held at Ste. Madeleine was near and dear to Mary’s heart, considering this was a time when family and friends would come together to celebrate the Metis culture, tell stories in their Michif language followed by howls of laughter, and listening to fiddling music and jigging.
Mary was a great cook and baker. She loved to play Bingo, card games, and storytelling. She loved to listen to her grandson Ethan sing and son’s Kenny and Robert play guitar. Mary lived for the moments when the family got together to play music, play cards, laugh, and eat. She could belt out a tune back in her day and you could find her singing for “her boys” when asked.
In the last few years of Mary’s life, her daughter Bev, cared for her with love and compassion. Bev’s caring nature was evident in the sacrifice she made for her Mom. Mary was overcome with grief with the passing of her baby Beverly. They have both gained their wings and are together eternally in heaven. Mary passed away surrounded by love with her family and friends close by.
Mary was a courageous, proud, and very resilient Metis Matriarch. Her legacy and love for her family will be reflected through the generations of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
