Mary Orsak Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandma, and great grandma, who left us peacefully in her sleep on December 29, 2023, at the Waterford Retirement Residence in Ottawa, Ontario.

Mary was born on February 25, 1930 on the farm near Langenburg Saskatchewan, where she was raised along with her five siblings.  After high school she attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and taught for a short period of time in a rural one room school.  In 1951 she married Stan Orsak from Gerald Saskatchewan, and soon after they moved to Binscarth.  She spent most of her life on the family farm where her primary attention was focused on raising her family and supporting all aspects of farm life.  She lived her final years in a retirement home in Ottawa near her children Jane and Glen.

Mary leaves behind a loving family: her children Paul (Pat Mandryk), Jane (Paul Chouinard), and Glen (Margo Hoyt); her grandchildren Laura (Jon), Owen, Lynn (Justin), Leah (Adam), Alanna (Anthony), Colin, Sydney, and her great-grandchildren Olivia and Charlotte. She is survived by her brother Jim Kohnen (Daricene), brother-in-law Garry Orsak (Peggy), sister-in-law Leona Klymuik (Mike) and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband Stan in August 2012, her parents Peter and Hedwig Kohnen of Langenburg, her sisters Agatha (Neyedly), Margaret (Mitschke), Joan (Salkeld), and her brother Hubert.

Mary lived a life in the service of her family and of many others who were blessed to experience her unconditional love.  She was guided by an enduring faith in God which was the foundation of her acceptance of others and of any of life’s circumstances.  She was known for her keen mind and her character was marked by her steady determination, tender love, and an ever-present gratefulness, especially in the face of adversity. Her gratitude remained undiminished even in her final days, a testament to her resilient spirit.

The family is appreciative of the compassionate care provided by the staff at the Waterford Retirement Residence, by the caregivers who were engaged to support mom in her final days, and by the staff at the Ottawa Hospital where Mom was occasionally cared for in recent months.

Her passing leaves a void in our lives, but her spirit and memories live on in our hearts. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate a life well-lived, marked by her love and unwavering spirit of gratitude.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
How do you know Mary Cecilia Orsak?
We are sorry for your loss.
Help others honor Mary's memory.
