Metro William Stanchuk

The family is saddened to announce that Metro William Stanchuk's courageous battle with cancer ended on June 18, 2026, at the age of 77 years.

Metro was born on June 8, 1949, in Russell, Manitoba, to Michael and Gladys Stanchuk (née Maz). He was the eldest of three children and grew up on the family farm northwest of Solsgirth, Manitoba, alongside his younger brother Tom (Peggy) and younger sister Debbie (Paul). With deep roots in the area, Metro spent most of his life living in the Solsgirth community he loved.

On November 20, 1976, Metro married the love of his life, Debbie Stanchuk (née Makinson), in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and making memories. They were blessed with three children: Colin (Andrea), Brian (Ashley), and Gaylene (Chad Zelmer).

Metro was a proud grandfather to eight cherished grandchildren: Makynze, Colton, Clara, Micah, Dylan, Ryder, Brady, and Cole. His grandchildren brought him immense joy, and they will deeply miss his presence at the hockey rink, his boat rides at the lake pulling the tube, his patience in teaching them how to waterski, his snowmobile adventures, and the many FaceTime calls that kept everyone connected.

In his younger years, Metro worked around Winnipeg before discovering one of his true passions—long-haul trucking. Over the years, he balanced trucking and farming, returning to the family farm near Solsgirth. When on the road he hauling everything from steel, machinery, livestock, and dry goods to oil and gravel. Never one to sit still, Metro later earned his school bus certification and enjoyed helping as a spare driver, transporting local children safely to and from school.

When he wasn't working, Metro enjoyed spending time with Debbie travelling to Mexico and Jamaica during the winter months and camping at Minnedosa Beach during the summer. He also loved fishing, snowmobiling, clearing snow with his tractor, and tinkering around the farm. Whether behind the wheel of a truck, on a tractor, at the lake, or with his family, Metro was happiest when he was busy and surrounded by those he loved.

Metro will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his willingness to lend a hand, his sense of humour, and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the memories he created with those closest to him.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Pieterse and the nurses and aides at Russell Health Centre and the Russell Community Cancer Care Clinic for their compassionate care and support.

A celebration of Metro's life will be held at a later date.
