Mildred Jean Rawlings (nee Ferris) passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday July 12, 2021, at Crocus Court Personal Care Home Roblin with her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Ronald, by her side. Milly was born March 4, 1929, in the Grainsby District. She was the third of six children born to Minnie (Shearer) and Joseph Ferris.
Milly lived on the family farm in the Grainsby District until 1956 when they moved to Dropmore. She attended Grainsby School to Grade 8. Milly worked for many farm families often helping after a new baby arrived. Milly enjoyed this as we all know she loved children. She also worked in MacNutt candling eggs. Milly loved to play softball and often told her grandchildren how she loved to play and wished she were younger so she could be out playing ball with them. Milly and Jack also liked to curl and when they couldn’t anymore you could find them watching it on TV. Milly’s most loved thing was dancing. Every once in a while you might see Jack and Milly dancing in the kitchen or living room with Jack whistling along.
On January 17, 1970 after 23 years, Milly and her sweetheart Jack finally said, “I DO”. They resided in the Hamlet of Dropmore. On July 21, 1970, they welcomed the birth of their daughter Sherry.
Milly always grew a garden with lots of vegetables. There had to be potatoes and tomatoes for Jack and peas for the three to eat out of the garden. She also loved to knit and made many baby outfits, blankets, mitts, Afghans and dish cloths. In her younger years she also embroidered many t-towels and tablecloths. She enjoyed spending time with all her family.
In 1991 she got the son she dreamed of when Sherry married Ronald Koroway. In December 1991, she became a Grandma to Laurissa followed by Travis and finally Samantha. They were her pride and joy; however we quickly came to realize that Travis was the favourite.
In 1992 Milly and Jack moved to Russell where they lived for ten years. You could find Milly in the garden or volunteering at The Thrift Store, something she enjoyed doing. In 2002 another move was made to Roblin to Maple Manor which just happened to be right across the street from the grandchildren.
In December 2014, Milly became a Great-Grandma to Trinity, or as she liked to call her “my girl”. She was followed by Ada, Mila and Troy. Milly couldn’t have loved or been more proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, they are truly what kept her going.
On November 15, 2018 life for Milly changed when she fell and broke her hip. Unable to have surgery meant she was confined to a wheelchair. In January of 2019, her final move was made to Crocus Court Personal Care Home.
Milly is predeceased by her husband Jack; parents Minnie (Shearer) and Joe Ferris; brothers Arnold and Vera, Norman; sister Hazel and George Bernhard; brother-In-laws Reinhold Haas and Walter Seidlitz; mother and father-in-law Fanny and George Rawlings; brother and sister-in-laws Walter and Lizzie Rawlings, Lil and Bert Hunt, Beatrice and Roger Cameron, Gladys and Willie Craig and Hazel and Joe Herbert; and grandson: Jordan Koroway.
