Nester Rekunyk of Roblin, Manitoba, formerly Rossburn and Winnipeg passed away at the Roblin Crocus Court on Saturday, February 20th at the age of eighty-three.
Nester was born in the R.M of Stuartburn, Manitoba on April 19, 1937 to Paul and Ann (nee Probinski) Rekunyk. He attended school and played baseball in his early years. He had his own Ukrainian music band - “Nester Rekunyk and the Roseau River Valley Boys”. According to Nester’s business card they were available for weddings, banquets and dances. One musical booking was extra special - while playing a lively polka for the crowd he spied Evangeline Sackarko. Rossburn, Manitoba was Evangeline’s hometown, and it is there that they exchanged marriage vows on June 27, 1959. They chose to make their home in what was then called Transcona, Manitoba.
Nester worked twenty years for Gershman Produce in Winnipeg. He was eager to go out on his own, buying his own travelling fruit truck, stopping at auction marts across small town Manitoba and Saskatchewan yet always coming home for the weekends. The last fourteen years of his employment was with Great West Metal which, by chance, included being cast as an “extra” in a Hollywood movie. Upon retirement they moved to Rossburn to help care for Evangeline’s mother.
Nester enjoyed going to the farm to cut wood. Nester really liked to help and give to others.
He would fire up his snowblower and go down Manor Drive to clean driveways plugged with snow. Nester was very particular, his lawn had to mowed perfect and snow removal had to be done just right! He would buy a large amount of fruit and then give most of it away.
Nester is predeceased by his parents, sisters Ethel and Mary, and his brother Peter, and sister-in-law Nellie Blachar.
He leaves to mourn, Marvin Mohr & Genevieve Poyser; Nigel and Kayla Gaber and their children Liv and Atlas. Ephraine(Alice) Sacharko of Rossburn, close family visitors Marie Mohr and Ella Curle, also many nephews and nieces and his very good friends from Rossburn and beyond.
Many of the staff and residents of Roblin Crocus Court said they will miss his smile and wit.
