Olga Hawryluk Obituary

After years of declining health, Olga Judith Hawryluk succumbed to pneumonia and passed away with her family by her side at the Grandview Health Centre on Sunday, January 5, 2020.

Olga was born in the Hillcrest School District (Zelena, Manitoba) to John and Olena Lebedovich (Midzain). She was the youngest of seven children and attended school in Hillcrest and Roblin. Upon completing her studies in Roblin, Olga went on to teach in Lundar and then attended Secretarial College in Winnipeg. She then moved to Vancouver for a period of time.

Olga returned home to help her parents, fell in love and married Rudolph Hawryluk on August 8, 1948. Together, they operated a mixed farming operation for 36 years in the Gleneden School District. Olga was very active in the community. She was an accomplished seamstress. Many will remember the beautiful garments she sewed, and she would always smile when she saw her work being worn in the community. Olga was a wonderful homemaker and great cook. Everyone was welcome in their home to take part in whatever was being served.

She loved music and her church. This combination led to her being the choral director of the St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church for many years.

In 1993, Olga and Rudolph retired from the farm and moved into Roblin where they continued to live a full life surrounded by many dear friends and family that would visit often. In addition to being able to do some travelling and bus tours, Olga was able to spend more time pursuing her love of crafting and we all benefited by having lots of knitting, crocheting and embroidery given to us. She continued to have a large garden and a plentiful freezer(s). She loved to go fishing with Rudolph and spent many days on the water either at Upper Dam or Lake of the Prairies.

Olga was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Rudolph; her parents, John and Olena; siblings Ann, Mary, Sylvia, Peter, Sam and Bill; and her grandson Tyler.

Olga is survived by three children Ted, Randy (Heather) and Deborah (Garry). Her grandsons Joe Hawryluk, Dan Hawryluk, Chris and David Roehl. Also surviving is Olga’s sister-in-law Jean Stanchuk; nieces Andrea (Henry) Astren, Marcia (Dennis) Muldoon and Sylvia (Bob) Stephens and nephews Wes (Barb) and Gerald (Bev) LeBedowick, Bill Lebedovich (Elena), and Bill (Betty) Nowosad and their extended families.
