Ruben Robert Alfred Hartung, age 93, passed away peacefully in the early hours of October 17, 2023 with family present in the Langenburg Nursing Home.
Ruben was born January 22, 1930 in Langenburg. He was the second child of Amelia and Robert Hartung who had him baptized and later confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Young Reuben attended Hohenlohe School up to Grade 8. He decided not to further his education, choosing to farm instead. At the age of 14 he joined Joe Reichmuth’s threshing crew. He continued with mixed farming and a dairy, selling cream to the local creamery.
At 30 years of age, Ruben married Elaine Nabe on June 25, 1960. They were blessed with three children: Laurie in 1961, Bob in 1962, and Jeff in 1964.
Ruben was an avid curler. His keen play and knowledge earned him and his team a trip to Chicago in 1964. Afterwards known as “Chicago Ruben Hartung, he curled for 77 years. Baseball was another passion. He played with the Hohenlohe Hornets and was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees. One of his dreams came true when he traveled to the Bronx with his family and attended several games at Yankee Stadium. Ruben was also a member of the local Elks Club.
After taking care of harvest and fall work, Ruben loved hunting ducks, geese and deer. When winter arrived he set traps to catch mink and other fur bearing animals.
Ruben was predeceased by his parents, his sister Margaret (Honey), and brothers-in-law George Honey, Fred Nabe, Richard, Walter and George Nabe.
He leaves to celebrate his life his loving wife Elaine, daughter Laurie, sons Bob and Jeff, grandchildren Kody (Toni), Tyler (Allison), Stephanie (Cory), and Matthew, as well as four great grandchildren. Ruben is also survived by his sisters-in-law Elsie (Roy), Caroline (Jim), Dorothy (Al). Ruben Hartung is also remembered by one surviving brother-in-law, Wayne Nabe, as well as many caring nieces and nephews.
