Sherry Self Obituary

On November 27, at the age of 69, Sherry passed away with her family at her side. Sherry received the best of care and comfort at the Russell Health Center, where she endured a brief but aggressive illness.

Sherry was born August 31,1956 in Oxbow, SK to Richard and Gwen Buchberger. She grew up in Langenburg and was involved in various school and community activities, from sports to babysitting. Sherry was raised with strong faith and family values, which guided her throughout her life.

After completing high school in Langenburg in 1974, she began her nurses training at Red River College in Winnipeg and Swan River, MB. She worked at Brandon General Hospital until December 1976. During this time, Sherry met Bob and their whirlwind romance brought her to Russell. She spent most of her nursing career at the hospital, later working at the personal care home and then doing immunization clinics. She was so gentle when giving needles that many people only wanted her to give them theirs. She touched countless lives throughout these years in her various roles, as a mentor training young nurses, a friendly coworker and compassionate caregiver. She recently achieved her goal of nursing for 50 years, a milestone of which she was extremely proud.

Sherry was passionate about gardening and took pride in caring for her beautiful yard that she shared with Bob, her husband of almost 49 years. Sherry and Bob married on January 29, 1977. Together they built a wonderful life, welcoming Jason in 1979 and Jennifer in 1982. Sherry and Bob shared their love of the outdoors with their kids. As a family they enjoyed making memories camping and fishing, spending time at Clear Lake and Asessippi, and being outdoors year-round. Sherry was a gracious host and an incredibly talented cook. She found great joy in sharing her homemade meals and treats with others. She loved her pets, the deer in the yard, and so many birds, especially her hummingbirds. Sherry was respected and admired for her strength, kindness, compassion, patience, generosity, positive attitude and gentle nature. She was the rock of the family and a keeper of knowledge. She had a large extended family and many dear friends who turned to her for her wisdom, guidance, and advice. Sherry enjoyed a simple life. She always had her nails done, but she wasn’t extravagant and didn’t like to be the center of attention. She had a heart of pure gold. She would do anything for anyone and always put others first. Sherry’s family was her whole world, especially her 2 granddaughters Lily and Joss. Though Sherry and Bob lost Jason far too soon, they enjoyed having Jennifer, Rodney and their girls close by. Sherry was a very dedicated and involved grandma. Her girls were the light of her life, her pride and joy. Everyone who knew Sherry knew of her steadfast love for her family.

Sherry was predeceased by her son Jason, parents Richard and Gwen, brother David, brother-in-law Albert. Left to mourn and cherish her memory, are her husband Bob,

daughter Jennifer, son in law Rodney, granddaughters Lily and Joss, sisters Trudy (Allan), Susan (Mike), Corinne (Myles), sister-in-law Beverley, many special nieces and nephews, and many other special relatives and friends.
