Valentine Bahsler Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Valentine Bahsler announce his passing on December 7th 2022 at the age of 85 years.

Valentine was the only son born to John and Mary Bahsler on November 7th 1937. He grew up on the family farm NE of Langenburg in the Hoffenthal district. He was baptized and confirmed in the Hoffenthal Lutheran Church. He attended school in the Flower Valley and Goehring school.

Valentine started farming at a young age. His parents had a small mixed farm. There was lots of cows to milk, pigs to feed, and a large garden to tend to. Times were tough; long days on the farm with no running water and no electricity. So when his dad was able to purchase a house in Langenburg, Valentine moved into town and commuted back and forth to the farm. This required uncle Valentine to make large lunches each morning to last him a full day on the farm. He did this for several years and in 1995, he sold his farm and enjoyed full retirement in town. He always had a large garden and there was plenty of produce to share with nearby neighbours.

Uncle Valentine always kept a tidy yard and home. Everything had its place whether it was in the kitchen cupboards, or in his sheds. If you took something you better put it back where you found it!

Valentine enjoyed playing pool, going uptown for coffee, having daily visits at Bumper to Bumper, taking drives in the country, and last but not least those single dances. Those shoes were always polished and ready for the next dance.

Uncle Valentine lost his hearing at a young age. He never left the house without a pen and notebook in his pocket, as quite often the conversation took place with a pen and paper.
Valentine was a very quiet and honest man and never married. His uncle Louis Bahsler once told him “every pot has a lid” so I guess uncle Valentine never found his matching lid.
Valentine remained in his home on Moltke Avenue until the fall of 2019. Because of declining health, he moved into West Haven  and then a few months later he was required to make his final move into the Centennial Care Home.

Valentine was predeceased by his parents John and Mary Bahsler, his sisters Doreen (Don McLeod), Theresa (Emil) Scheinous, Isabel (Vern) Volesky, and a brother in law Roy Ulmer. Left to mourn his passing is his youngest sister Diana Ulmer of Barrhead AB. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Valentine will be laid to rest in the Langenburg Community Cemetery in the spring of 2023. The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Centennial Care Home and also to his dear cousin Dorothy and Ken Neumeier for all their care and concern they gave Valentine in his last years.

God saw you getting weary
a cure not meant to be
So He put his arms around you
and whispered “Come with me”

With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you fade away
Although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay

So a golden heart stopped beating
your tender hands at rest
God took you home to prove to us
He only takes the best
